Fatal Crash on I-66 in Fairfax County Claims Driver’s Life
Devastating Scene Leaves One Dead in Tragic Chain-Reaction Accident
Virginia State Police (VSP) confirm that a driver has been pronounced dead and another injured after a horrific crash on Interstate 66 westbound in Fairfax County, VA Wednesday evening. VSP responded to the formation of a three-vehicle chain-reaction which had happened at around 6:30 p.m. on the 51-mile marker. Reportedly, one driver sustained some minor injuries.
Not Even Ten Minutes Later, Another Three-Vehicle Chain-Reaction Occurs
Additional details from VSP informed that a tow truck had been responding to the prior accident mentioned and had been slowing to a stop. Out of nowhere, an SUV rear-ended the tow truck. The impact caused the SUV to spin out and strike the pickup truck that was also waiting nearby. The driver of the SUV was hastily taken to Fairfax INOVA Hospital and sadly, they succumbed to their injuries that same evening.
Significant Injuries: The Drivers of The Tow Truck & Pickup Truck
The driver of the tow truck was reported to have been taken to the same hospital for some non-life threatening injuries that needed treatment. The driver of the pickup truck, however, managed to emerge from the collision unscathed.
Interstate 66 Westbound Experiences Closure
As a result of the chain-reaction crash, the entire interstate was closed and traffic was diverted onto the surrounding shoulder lanes for passage. Miraculously, near 8:10 p.m. Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) officials made the announcement that one express lane was re-opened for passage. Fortunately, by 11 p.m. all lanes were completely open and cleared for safe use again.
